I have the following problem: my sound card (VIA's AC'97 sound card integrated in the motherboard) won't work in DOS! I somehow got the CD-ROM and the mouse up and running in DOS but I STILL can't get the sound card to work! If it's relevant, I have Win98. Help me, please!

Is it compatible with SoundBlaster? You should check their webpage and see if you can get drivers for it or compatible ones.

It is compatible, yes. There's a feature in BIOS where you can enable or disable the SoundBlaster, but the thing is I STILL don't know how to make it work in DOS...

Where can I get it? And which one should I get? Also, I don't know how to install ANY driver in DOS...

As far as I know your card with not work under
real mode DOS now if you are trying to get sound in a DOS box via windows you
shouldn't have any problems getting it to work. You may have to fiddle with
the sound settings in the programs your are trying to get sound to work
One thing you have to understand is AC'97 isn't your actual sound card. It is
a main part of it but its the the actual card. The reason I know this is because
when I bought my computer which has the ac'97 it came with the wrong soundcard
drivers. I spent a long time finding the right drivers and in the process I
learned a lot about this subject.
Click Here to help you find out what card you really do have. When you click
that link it will open a window with a bunch of pictures of different soundcard
chipsets. After you find the one that matches what you have it will give you
more info on your card. After you find that out you may be able to search the
Internet for more info about DOS and your soundcard. I recommend www.google.com
for searching. I know this doesn't really answer your question but it may help
point you in the right direction. Your soundcard may or may not work under real
mode DOS I can't tell you that without being there but the info above should
help you out to find out for sure.
So the quick solution is to bite the bullet and go and buy a Sound Blaster®
You will probably get better sound quality anyways :þ

Thanks Sandman! Your reply helped a lot! But the thing is that running a program in a DOS box in Win98 is out of the question. Almost every time I runa a .bat file the computer crashes. I get a black screen with little vertical green lines at the top of the screen (only a couple of pixels long) and that's why I'm trying to get the sound card to work in Real DOS in any way possible.

Click here to try a set of drivers that claim to work with both dos and ac97. If these dont work write back and let us know a little bit more about your hardware, Mainly what mobo you have and I will see what I can come up with. One thing I thought I would mention that the driver above is around 4.5 megs to download.

Click here for the drivers it didnt post the link on my last post. And just in case it dosent work again copy and paste http://www.dbsnet.co.za/downloads/via/68mu120a.zip into your address bar

The drivers you posted were correct, thanks. However the sound still doesn't work. The program I run detects the sound card, but when I test it I hear nothing (if anyone even TRIES to post something like "plug in the speakers, dork!" or "turn the speakers on!" then I'll just.....do...um...something, I guess...). And there's another problem. When I turn the SoundBlaster option on in BIOS the Windows won't load. When I turn the option off, they do load. I think those drivers you posted are the key, though. They created a Viaudio directory on C: which contains the files that load the drivers for DOS, but it won't work unless I turn the SoundBlaster option on in BIOS. Oh, and running in a DOS box under Windows caused another problem (see I'm about to go berserk!!! post)

Here is one more thing to try before I run out of ideas. Click here to download the dos setup program. It is a another zip file so unzip it onto a floppy and boot into dos and run install.exe Hopefully this will do it.

I'm having the same problem!
Some things I experienced is that the C:\VIAUDIO\VIAUDIO.COM first just printed "If you want to play conventional DOS games, turn on your legacy sound in the BIOS". When I did that, the next time my computer started up it worked i guess, and printed out "Soundblaster Pro compatible sound installed succesfully" or something. But now it prints "COFF (checking viruses)" then some binary lines and meanwhile it is beeping wildly all the time.
A thing I noted is that although in my BIOS the IRQ was 5, under windows the IRQ for the AC'97 stated 9, and I couldn't change it there. When I changed it under my BIOS, my computer hangs when running VIAUDIO.COM.
I hope this info helps someone...

I also have been trying to get the AC '97 sound card to function in DOS and have found that if the signal is amplified greatly the sound is audible. I have come to the conclusion that I need some kind of volume control for the audio device. Try seeing if you can connect the output signal from the card to an Amplifier in Real DOS mode and run a program that you know has detected the sound card, you should then be able to hear at least something from the device

I've been having an altogether different problem with my AC'97 sound card.
Like all of you I have tried to get it to work in DOS. I found that the driver was telling me to enable my Soundblaster in the BIOS. There wasn't a function for this so I updated my BIOS using MSI Live Update and the function appeared! But still no sound...even though the drivers now work.

You need two drivers. One of them is not distributed in the VIA package. This is VIAFMTSR.COM you can find this file by entering it's name in a search engine. Your autoexec.bat should then look like this:
LH C:\VIAUDIO\VIAUDIO.COM
LH C:\VIAUDIO\VIAFMTSR.COM /dosmidi
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330Good luck!

Sandman,
the link in response #10 :"Here is one more thing to try before I run out of ideas. *Click here* to download the dos setup program. It is another zip file"
seems to be broken.
Can you please post it again ?
Thxs.

here you will get all info and the two needed files to set this device up...

as you can see this is a german site.

... in addition to my prior post, I'd like to tell another interesting fact about the ac'97...
you have to use
Soundblaster PRO
settings in your dos-game...

I've got the same problem. i've downloaded the viaudio.com and the viafmtsr.com file. i also made the required changes in the autoexec.bat and after rebooting, there's this "If you want to play conventional DOS games, turn on your legacy sound in the BIOS" - message. but there's no such option in my BIOS, even after updating.
i'm using a Fujitsu/Siemens MS6178 motherboard with I810 chipset

My motherboard is a MSI K7T Pro 2a with the AC'97 audio on board! ive got so tired of tying to make the sound work that ive bought a PCI sound card to use in dos but the damn motherboard burned the soundcard! even after ive disabled everything on the bios! AC'97 onboard sound chip Sucks!

If you do not have a seting in your bios to enable the legacy audio then typically you have a jumper on your motherboard that you have to set

I just upgraded to K7VT MB and it has the AC97 onboard soundcard you all are talking about. If someone could please tell me which of these drivers/patches work, I'd be very greatful. I'm about to start shopping for DOS compatible PCI soundcard.

I think I've got similar problem. But my motherboard is ECS K7S5A and I have no sb-emulation option in my BIOS.
Do you know any solutions for ECS motherboards with AC'97 on-board sound cards?
Please help!

i want a dos software version for my pc via ac97 made in my motherboard
email me back how program te send over messenger or emaildutch :
ik ben op zoek naar een progra wat mij via ac97 kan installeren in dos dat ik hem kan gebruiken in dos .

Use the mistic ritual that worked on my computer. You'll need these files:
68mu120a.zip; viafmtsr.com
Install the 68mu120a drive. Restart the machine.
Copy these files to the directory "C:\VIAUDIO":
Viaudio.com; viafmtsr.com; Dos4gw.exe; Install.exe
Insert these command lines into your autoexec.bat:
LH C:\VIAUDIO\VIAUDIO.COM
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330
Restart the machine and then run viafmtsr.com ( don't close the window; just
minimize it). Now run the dos game (in another window).

I need a driver for this card and i need it within friday at noon...... Please or else my parents will go crazy.....I reallly need this driver,

I have ECS K7S5A motherboard and I really
need any soundblaster emulator for SIS.
Where can I get it?. Please, help me.

I have read all these posts and got all the files you guys suggest, but my only problem is (I sigh with disbelief at how stupid i am)
HOW THE HELL DO YOU ENABLE SOUNDBLASTER IN THE BIOS?
