You can't run MS-DOS programs? Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but one way of altering the master boot record is if something else has messed with it and you then run a Norton AntiVirus scan. It'll tell you something was changed and ask if you want to change it back. But I guess you can't go and alter it yourself for any reason when you are in Windows.

You can not un-read only all files and all files in subdirectories in one quick shot inside windows.

I still use the command prompt to quickly delete files-
del *.tmp
in GIU-
Click on type to get 'em all together.
Click on first one then shift click on last one to select 'em.
Hit Delete key.
Click OK you are sure.

you *can* alter the MBR. go download my disk editor (WDe) and see for yourself, hehe.

Also, run an external CD drive without Windows software, simply through using the DOS drivers
. Windows external CD software sucks, especially when my drive predates 9xIBM

Well, it depends on exactly what you mean by GUI vs. DOS. GUI means Graphical User Interface, all it does is translate the signals from your input device (mouse, pen, etc.), so it could be argued that anything you do in Windows using the Run command or in the Command Prompt window is not being done in GUI because you're actually circumventing the GUI to do it.
8^)

Because of the RUN command you can type any exe and run it, so the point is probably that there are not three things you cannot do from a GUI. But I will start the ball rolling with one:
1. You can't type WIN and load windows.

Okay. I'd like to know how you can format your HDD from within Windows. I say it can't be done.

you cannot run *ANY* 'smartcopy' function from win-explorer, ex. auto-copy only newer files (xcopy)

1. You can't utilize mouse functions and subroutines in a IDE programming environment under Windows.
2. You can't run those legacy DOS games under Windows. [Example: Crusader: No Remorse, Crusader: No Regret (BTW...Does anyone have a copy of Crusader: No Regret they're willing to part with or copy for me?]
3. You don't have to worry *as much* about the kernel crashing as much as in Windows. I have yet to see a text message tell me "Unexpected page fault in IO.SYS," or "Fatal exception 0E in COMMAND.COM".
Those are the good things about DOS. Solid, reliable. You want a GUI in DOS? Make your own! Or use DOSSHELL. Just none of that graphical bull.
