After vacuuming the insides of my Gateway 2000 486DX-50, I booted up and got nothing on the monitor, heard the HD spin and received 2 beeps, a short pause then 4 quick beeps in a row. What has happened. (Worked fine prior to vacuum; interior was filthy dirty including spider webs!!!)

The beeping is from POST failure. POST is the power on self test. When something MAJOR goes wrong and the computer cannot display errors on the monitor, it will then give the beep codes. Each BIOS manufacturer uses slightly different beep codes, so you'd need to post your BIOS' manufacturer's name to get an exact answer.
Take a look at this page: http://www.randomc.com/~dperr/beepcode.htm
and you'll get an idea of what POST error beep codes are. Probably, the first 2 beeps indicate memory problems. I'd try removing and reseating your memory chips and see what happens.

Vacuum cleaners can build up a very significant static electric charge. You can very easily fry some important components with the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner. It is always best to use compressed air when cleaning out your case.

Yeh I have never heard of using a vacuum cleaner to clean the insides of a pc. There is no way I would have done anything like that. I have always used compressed air with no problems.

Also check to make sure that all of your jumpers are in place, the vacume cleaner may have pulled a few loose ones out.
