A little info would be somewhat enlightening as to your prob.
I gather you are using a 286 with boot probs?
Can we assume it is NOT booting?
If it isn't then copy the sys files to the c: drive.
Now where did my Crystal ball go?

have you try hitting F1 and if so what happ? yes you do need a boot disk i belive
so you can at install your sys files or auto. com., ect...that way you wont need a boot disk and have a little more play with it.

Jon3.1 with all due respect you have said very little . So lets try and find out.
If you have a Dos disk 1 or a floppy with the command.com on it then boot to the floppy and type fdisk, it should find the h/drive. If it does then you should be able to copy the system files. if it doesn't go into the Bios and see what is there.
Good luck!

This old tower is huge-286

It says that message like as it were going to load autoexec.bat at startup - but its not- the beep noise leads to the 5.25 drive trying to load a disk. I hit f1 and it did crap- tryed to load more on 5.25.

I can control alt to restart. f8 or f5 dont work in this situation. dont think escape will either.

Jon, Eddie is correct in saying your posting is somewhat confusing.

You advise you have a multi-user sytem - must you have this?

If yes, are there any special procedures required in order to boot? I do not recall the function keys being available during boot.

If no, why not use normal dos?

Normally when a 286 boots, it looks first at the A:drive (5.25" or 3.5") and if there is NO FLOPPY *WHATSOEVER* in that drive, it then attempts to boot from the hdd.

Good luck - keep us posted.

F5 & F8 are functions of DOS6 - not the bios.

Either you need a 5¼ boot floppy (or a boot drive switcher, like bboot) and/or the setup floppy for that model - 286s often didn't have CMOS setup, it was a separate disk.

A little clarity in what you post would go a long way in determining the solution here.

yeah its not booting to the HDD. IM also betting its and older DOS version.

"At- Multiuser" is the first I guess "command line" that loads. Then scans the memory

THEN

from there says..

"Fail to boot..(something not realted to hardware)...hit F1 so i do and.. KEEPS loading a red light under the 5.25 drive.

WHen I lock the case of the tower it says the keyboard is locked WTF?

THANKS - help is working.

Well, you can't even be sure that it has DOS as the OS - there were others.. honest.

"Command Line" is the from the ROM chip.

Obviously seeking a boot device - are you even sure that it has a hard drive?
IDE drives were pretty rare back then - either runs from its own control card or else a proprietary port on the board - not the simplest thing to plunk a modern machine.

Likely there's a dead battery (something like a CMOS batt.) - I've seen some pretty odd battery hookups in early models.
