Hi,
I have 2 problems in running pure mode dos. 1. I have a ESS Allegro 1988 sound chip and cannot find any drivers related to DOS support by emulation of the sound blaster or sound blaster pro. 2. I have an Intel 82830M graphics chipset and if I run very old Sierra adventure games, all the text is incredibly distorted. Is this a known issue? I am running Windows 98SE and I can't get sound either in pure mode dos or in a box. If anyone can help me with one or either, it would be greatly appreciated.

1.) For the DOS sound problems you could try uninstalling your sound card drivers and when you reboot try some of the drivers for your soundcard from the ESS sight to see if you get DOS support there.

2.) Your DOS Video problem; I had a similar problem with an S3 video card running an old DOS version of WORKS, the text was unreadable. S3 had a fix for it, it seemed that during the installation of the the S3 TRIO 3D card the DOS 8514 fonts were removed. The fix put them back in. This fix was put out by S3 so I have no idea if it is relevant to your problem and if it would even work.

You could download the file 8x14.exe to your game folder and try it;

http://www.g-zero.com/Downl-Misc.htm

Download 8x14.exe to your Sierra game folder
Create Folder called BATCH
Open notepad and type the following lines

cd\
cd YourGameFolder (NOTE BELOW)
8x14
YourGAME(command to start your game)

NOTE; if your game folder is nested in subfolders the line would read something like;

cd games\DOSGame\YourGameFolder

Save the file as C:\Batch\YourGame.bat

Open your AUTOEXEC.bat file to and add this line to it;

path = c:\batch

Exit and save

Right click the desktop shortcut to your game and choose PROPERTIES.
Under the tab PROGRAM and in the box CMD LINE type

C:\BATCH\YourGame.BAT

Now double click the shortcut and see what happens. Like I said, this is a fix for an S3 video card DOS problem so it might not help you, but what the hey.

Good Luck
