I have just reformatted my computer and for some reason my Windows Movie Maker will no longer accept my .MOV files. It will play but all you see is a black screen and no sound. I have updated everything around 60 updates installed since reformatting. Before formatting I always used .MOV files in Windows Movie Maker making my short films and other projects. Could anyone help me?

Thanks

Movie maker doesn't support .mov files. I believe you have to convert these before they will work in movie maker. Now i have no idea if there is a plug in but i don't believe so.

As Ive stated I have always used .MOV files in Windows Movie Maker. Not sure if I did on my old computer using XP. But as long as Ive had my laptop with Vista .MOV files have worked perfectly. Guessing I may be missing a codec from somewhere...

try renaming the .mov to .MPG , that will probably work for you.

renaming a file will not change it's format, nor will it miraculously make it work.

You are correct in that it's a codec issue. By default, Windows will not play mov files, usually you need Quicktime or some other viewer that have the mov codecs for playback. You probably installed a codec pack at some point. Google "codec packs" and you will be presented with tons of them. Find one that has mov codecs and install it.

Kurt I have to disagree with you. My Showbiz 2 will not read .mov files, so I just rename them to .mpg and they work on that program.
I guess we learn something new every day ;)

Ah still no luck. I know theres a way, Ive been using WMM for some years now before the crash. I just made a whole movie before the crash all using MOV files off of my camera. I sure enough didnt convert 100 files lol. But anyways, anyone have any ideas?

You may have not converted them but you did install a codec at some point that could read them. You need to install the codec, period. there is no other way you are going to get them to work without it.

As I said before, Google for codec packs and look for ones with the MOV codec in them and install one.
