CDs are older technology that were in use long before DVDs were developed. CD's continue to use the older technology with the lower storage capacity for compatibility reasons.

DVD's were produced primarly because CD's had insufficient capacity for videos.

It originally stood for Digital Video Disk, but with wider use it now stands for Digital Versatile Disk.
