When loading pictures, they crash!

When loading most images, they crash the application running it. This happens in all programmes, i.e. Flash, Dreamweaver, Search, My Computer, Messanger. Iam not sure what the problem is, it could be a virus or a bug it could be memory problems...It is a real problem since iam a Computer degree student and web designer and need to access images without doing a wipe. Any ideas?

Instead of loading most images just load some of them.
(Couldn't resist)
How about if you right click on the image and select Open or Open With and select the application to open it? Or open them from within the application by going to File, Open?

Iam talking about any images, even just one, it just crashes...I cant even use windows to browse images as it crashes.......
