What is the Program Name stored in my photos?

April 17, 2011 at 04:18:55
Specs: Windows 7
After upgrading recently from WinXP to Win7, for various reasons I no longer use Adobe Photo Elements 7.0 (now de-installed) for my photo work. However, under 'Properties' thousands of my photo collection contain an entry 'Program name' with that PE7 software name still in there. What is the function of this 'Program name' entry NOW and will it affect processing using other photo editing and admin. software if it remains in there now that that program has been removed? Should I or must I change it? How? Each photo individually?? And if it has no function, why is it in there in the ffirst place? Thank you.

That information is in there just for you. It is a good thing. It is called EXIF info.

It tells you, the photographer, which program you used to edit the image. When I l,ook at the proerties of any of the thousand images I do not find Program Name within their properties page so supect PE7 added it.
It is only informational and unless the file type is propriatary then it does not matter. Otherwise the photographer would want to know which program was used to edit the image so it can be done again.

Are all the images .jpg? If so then not ot be concerned as there are many upon many programs or applicaiotns that will allow you to edit .jpg images or file type.

There are programs out that that allow you to change the EXIF info.

Thank you Bryco for the knowledge that it is harmless EXIF data. Until your email arrived, I had no idea what it was.

You are quite right. I do not find the Program name directly under 'Properties'. In fact, I l-click on 'Properties', then l-click on 'Details' and there, under 'Origin' I find the field 'Program name'. Although for some photos I read 'Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0' there, for some others it says simply, without a specific programme name, 'ver.1.00' ... I have inspected a few of these and find that the ones that I looked at are some that I received from a friend who has a Minolta digital camera; I use a Leitz. That presumably has made a difference, but I have no idea why or how! However, in some photos of my collection there is no entry in the 'Program name' field at all!
Be that as it may, you have taken away a small worry and for that I am duly grateful. I thought that maybe something was wrong that had to be corrected. Now I can save myself a lot of time and unnecessary work just by leaving the Program Name entries alone.

Once again, many thanks and best regards.
