Hello? How can I convert a movie vob file into a mpg? This is for the purpose of eventually choosing a movie frame to capture into a photo on my pc. Ham30, if you are there, I posed the question to you but did not understand the conversion process...........Derry Ann

nero can do it as can many other utilities, the vcd format is basicaly mpeg 1 in a different wrapper. VOB's are basically mpeg2's

If you are simply interested in the photo and not interested in the sound, then you can simply change the VOB extension to MPG. As said though... you may lose the audio track.
(a VOB file is a MPEG2 with the sound muxed)

Just copy the VOB file to your hard drive, change the extension of the filename. for example if the VOB file is: My Movie.VOB Change it to: My Movie.MPG
And you can use Virtualdub (free) to display the movie and select the frame to save.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Hi, Ham30! VOB files are MPEG 2, correct? The VirtualDub refused these. In Nero Recode I changed the VOB to MPEG 4. The VirtualDub refuses this also. What MPEG do you use that VirtualDub accepts?

Sorry about that Derry, I was sure that Virtualdub would handle mpeg2. It 'will' accept mpeg1 and AVI.
The free progarm at the following web site is supposed to convert DVD to AVI. You could try it.

Ham 30, you are a jewel of knowledge! Through your suggestion of the divx-digest site, I ended up with..."DGIndex" and that software is just great. Takes the original vob, shows it as the movie, then allows each frame to be shown and saved as bmp. Everything I was trying so hard to obtain. Thank you so very much.... Derry Ann

Happty to try and help Derry. Nice work finding the right utility.
