I want to take vhs tapes and get them on my computer to edit and burn. I have 2 camcorders - one is mini Dvd, but doesn't have the capability to be put on pc - the other is an analog Sony Handicam TRV-25. I tried today to see if I could record the vhs tape onto the handicam, but apparently I can't. How am I to get the vhs footage onto my computer? Is there some other way?

My device manager says I have Legacy Video Capture devices - I also have Adobe Premiere 6.0. as well as the Windows Movie Maker. My son also has a SonyVaio with that GigaPocket stuff - but I still don't know how to get the VHS to either of these computers to be edited. Thanks SO MUCH in advance for any help you may have!

the sony vaio should have a rca a/v input in the front or back.. he should have some sort of video playing software.. that will show the incomming signal. then I would think you could just set the record format and start it up.
Shuttle AN35N-Ultra
AMD 2600B-M O/C 2.3Gig
Geil 1gb 3200DDR
Gforce 6800 Ultra 256ddr
UV Clear Acrylic Blue case

OK, so just plug in those 3 plugs in each, play the vcr and can record in say Premiere? OK - no options for the Dell that you can see?
Thanks so much for your quick response goldenknob!

If the Dell doesn't have a Video/audio capture card, you will have to install one. Hopefully you have a free PCI slot.

Video Capture card or an Analog to Digital Converter.
See my response #7 in the above noted thread for more info.Bryan

Thanks max00 - like I said my device manager says I have Legacy Video Capture devices - is that the same thing? I'm pretty sure .... oh its a 128 MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 Pro - thats a capture card right? Under Display adapters?
Yes Bryco - I saw that thing on the Plextor and am seriously considering it if all else is not capable of being done. Thanks for your help.

From the quick search I did, it doesn't look like the ATI9800 Pro has video capture.
A video capture card normally has three RCA jacks, yellow for video, red and white for audio.

If you have firewire input on your computer and your mini-dv camcorder has firewire output as well as the analog inputs. You may be able to use your mini-dv as a converter. This works with some mini-dv models (some Sony's have this feature).

If you have a MiniDV camera, it SHOULD have a firewire connection for your PC.
VHS to DVcam to Premiere. No capture card needed. Firewire cards are pretty much free after rebate and multipurpose vs. $100+ single task vid capture card.
I use a JVC MiniDV deck (small VCR basically) fo all my capture & conversions. Same as using a DVcam, which is what I used before purchasing the deck.
