Since you have WinXP then you also have Windows Movie Maker - this is a simple, user friendly capture program.

It is easier if you have a firewire connection since this will enable you to control the camcorder fron your PC while you transfer tape footage.

Be aware that capturing and editing video will take up a LOT of room on your HD!!!

First, As above, you are better to use the firewire port for cpaturing... usb isn't really used anymore for capturing video (not fast enough)

Second... Movie maker can be used, but if you want to do any REAL capturing/editing/burning then you need a product like Pinnacle studio, or Avid liquid. Studio is a good choice... not too expensive and you can do a lot with it.

ADDED: Ray Peate is right, a capture and edit requires a fair bit of HDD.

An hour of DV is about 13gig and it is recommended that you have twice that for editing purposes

Note: USB2 is faster than Firewire by the numbers.

In the real world they are about the same.

I like Firewire over USB2 because I can control the Camcorder using the PC's keyboard and mouse.
I have done both using the same PC and same camcorder and other than the above reason I see no difference.

"USB is faster by the numbers"

Yes this is true, but usb data has to be processed, whereas firewire is a straight through feed... no processing involved. This is why firewire is prefered over usb for video work.

BTW: Studio 9.4 is a GOOD program... still use it a lot... But you should consider upgrading to studio 10. It was pretty bad in the beginning but if updated to 10.6 it's pretty dependable. A 10.7 beta is out and being tested now, and it will fix most of the left over problems. 10.7 is also come with an HD plugin that allows you to burn HD to a standard dvd for playback in the toshiba HD-DVD player... works GREAT!!!
