A friend of mine had a website created (http://aaaabeautifulyard.com). It's a simple site but does anyone know how the transparency (see through) effects and merging were done in the photos on the home page? What products are needed to create these effects? I only have photoshop elements 2.0. Thank YOu

Photoshop Elements will do it. To make the background transparent, file, save for web. File type must be gif, there will be a checkbox for transparency.

I looked again at the website. I think more likely what they did was to make the entire picture first and then used it as a background.
You can do it with Elements using layers. Just lower the transparency on the top layer or layers to let the one beneath show through as you want.
Use it as a background and position the text on your site where you want it within the picture.

You can also do it "on-the-fly" using the alpha and opacity CSS attributes.
