transferring movie files

I am trying to back up and import movie files from my JVC everio hard disk camcorder. Although I thought I had copied and burned the movie clips, the disk does not read in a DVD player, nor can I import clips into imovie - HELP!

What type of files are on the camcorder? Are they avi, if so, they won't play on a domestic dvd player, but should play in a pc dvd player. UK MP's are thieving scumbags. EU members are worse.
