Reply: (edit)You need to start with a hi quality video capture card - make sure that it can work at a resolution you are happy with e.g. 640 * 480 stereo etc. You can get USB ones but they must be USB2 to get hte data transfer rate. You also need LOTS of harddisk space

Reply: (edit)You don't need a capture card-- well, sort of. If I were you, I'd buy a Canon MiniDV camera. They have analog pass through, which takes place of the capture card. You plug the 8mm RCA outs to the Canon DV RCA in, then firewire from the camera to the computer (firewire PCI cards are under 20$). That's it! Simple as a vcr. You don't even need a tape in the Canon. A good capture card starts at 100$. A new digital video camera starts at 300$. So, for roughly 200$ more you have a new palm sized miniDV camera + you can convert your old tapes.
