What is the trick to transferring video directly to my DVD writer from XP movie maker? I have to save it to my hard drive first then it will let me save it to DVD with Nero express.
XP movie maker has a button that says "write to disc" but when I try it I get an error or it does not detect hardware.
I also would like to be able to write data direct to a CD or DVD from a program with out first saving it to harddrive.

Transfer will only work to CD or HDD from WMM. For DVD, you have to do as you said, save and then use Nero.

If you have Nero though you really don't need WMM, you should be able to capture the movie from your camera, then edit and burn all with Nero.

If you want to do anything serious with video then it's best to trash WMM and get a REAL video program. Nero, Pinnacle studio, My movee, Pinnacle liquid... The list goes on.

WMM meets only the most BASIC needs for video work.

Do a Google search with "direct to DVD software".
