Transfer Hi8MP tapes to computer with no firewire capability

Specs: Windows 8
I have a Sony Digital 8 DCR-TRV140 Digital handycam that records on Hi8MP tapes. It has 3 ports: S-video, a round AV out, and firewire. My computer is a laptop which does not have any of these input options and no card slot into which I can put a firewire card or anything else. My laptop has HDMI, Ethernet, USB, Mic, headphone, and a DVD burner. How might I get these movies from Hi8 tape to my computer? What are my options?

One way would be to get a compatible PCMCIA firewire card for your laptop:

There's also some firewire USB adapters:

You mention that you haven't got a card slot so you are limited to USB/firewire and the cheap ones I've tried don't work very well, either the camera isn't recognised or one that I got working dropped frames and eventually froze the system. I finally found one that did - it cost around £30 and I got it from a specialist photography shop. Can't remember the brand name and I haven't got it any longer but try your local photography shop would be my suggestion.
