Hello,
I will try to be as clear as possible - if any kind souls would like to help but need more information, please let me know.
I'm trying to transfer some holiday footage for my relatives, so far with little success. They have the Panasonic NV-GS4 camera and have recorded onto DV tapes.
There is an AV IN/OUT socket on the camera: the other end of the cable splits into the usual three plugs; Video, Left Audio and Right Audio. I've connected these three cables to my PC.Using Nero Vision, I can readily play back the tape using the camera's VCR function, see everything very clearly on the monitor, and also hear the recorded sound through the speakers connected to my PC.
However, when I tried to capture a few minutes as a sample, the resulting file shows perfect video but with no audio at all. When I tried again, I noticed that Nero could not detect any audio at all. I have changed the audio settings to make Nero look at all audio connections (including the "Front Line-In" sockets that the cables are plugged into) but still nothing. Similarly, Audacity can't detect any audio either.
I have a horrible feeling I'm missing something easy, or that it can't be done. I'd even be willing to capture the audio seperately from the video if need be.
Any advice gratefully received!
Sarah

Left and Right Audio is for Stereo Input, most PC's just have ONE mono line-in port.
Also what device are you using to input the Video ?

I would say you need a capture card. Then you can use windows movie maker or other pay progs like Pinnacle, showbiz 2, etc to cature and edit your video.

Thanks for your input guys.
WW: At he front of my PC, I have a panel with various inputs and outputs, including the three I mentioned: Video IN, AUDIO LEFT IN, AUDIO RIGHT IN. These are connected to the DV cam which is the video input.
4Real: I have Nero Vision which has successfully captured video input from sources other than my camera in the past - do these other programs do something more to recognise the audio coming from the camera?
Sarah

Hmmmm....if you have those inputs on your PC you should be getting sound.
Why not try windows movie maker and see if everything gets captured?I haven't used Nero so I can't comment on that, sorry.

The camcorder should have a Firewire port. If so, you should definitely be using that to connect the camcorder to your computer. When using that you will also be able to directly control the camcorder through the capturing software (e.g. Nero). If you use the AV connections you are degrading the quality.
When using a firewire connection the video is transferred digitally. If you use the AV connections then the video is first converted to analog and then converted back to digital by the computer - reducing the overall quality.

Thanks again everybody,
I'll have a look for a firewire cable and see if it is successful Michael. As you say 4Real, I'd like to capture the video with as much of the original quality as possible.
Sarah

try the movie maker and see if you get both audio & sound

4Real - Thank you, you're a star!
Just tried Movie Maker and it works! I can see what you mean about the lack of quality with my current setup, so I will be buying a firewire cable later today.
Thanks for your help!
Sarah

Glad to help and thanks for posting back!
