Severely outta sync

When I convert a DVD into a divx file, the audio and video of the final product is severely out of sync. It starts off fine, but by the end of the movie, the audio can be up to 30 seconds ahead of the video. There doesn't seem to be any setting in the Divx Converter that would stop this. The source material (.ifo and .vob files) plays back fine, so I doubt the problem lies in the source video.
Anyone know why?
