School computer problem

Specs: Windows XP
Alright, I am working from a computer in my Highschool media arts class right now. We have a project on the go where we have to shoot a documentary and edit it on the computer. Which would be fine, I work with sony vegas 8 at home so I know my way around with video editing but the files we record through cameras and upload have a nasty habit of freezing up the system. Being on a computer that has such limitations I can't find any way around it. These file which are .wmv .mod and .avi I think all have some sort of problem. Either they A) Freeze up when you manually click on them B) Can be played only by being opened when the SD card is in the computer [The screen that pops up to upload them to the comp which I to have tried] C) Play fine both ways but will not work in Windows movie maker and will not be converted [through online converting sites or the program we have here]
The computer guy at the school has tried to help me but the files still freeze, other students on other computer have the same problem and I’ve even tried formatting the card through the camera it’s self but it still freezes resulting in having to log off.

Tell the tech guy to use event viewer logs and performance monitor logs to diag freeze. Might have to enable and use dump logs.

Don't play with it yourself.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
