Solved revert back to an earlier saved version in windows movie mak

April 7, 2012 at 13:48:59
Specs: Windows Vista
was working on a movie, went to publish, said I had to save and use a windows dvd maker, and so I hit save as, instead of save, it said do you want to replace existing version, i said yes, and it rewrote it, but in the mean time, my movie maker had opened up a new file and i didn't know i was saving nothing over something... how do i restore the older version of the file?

Find the file in explorer.

Right click on it, go to properties, select the previous version tab.

If there is a previous version there, you are in luck, if not the file is gone.

Hope this helps

I did that and I don't have that listed as a property option... I have General, Security, Custom, and Details. Is there somewhere else I should be looking for this tab? I know it has to be in there some where.... ugh.. what a bummer.

Sorry I guess you have Vista Home. But the VSS service should had been running when you replaced your file. You just don't have the GUI because that is included with the more expensive versions of Vista. But you can use a program called shadowexplore to retrieve the previous versions of your files.

All I can say, is THANK YOU SO MUCH! I can not believe that was so simple. I loaded the Shadow explorer, found my file, and although it was not the last saved file, it was the imported file, and it was much much more than I had with nothing. I can easily finish my project now. I can not believe I have been able to recover it. I spent 20 hours on this project, and cried when I lost it... seriously. I couldn't believe it was gone, I had just hit the publish to DVD when this all happened in the first place and was glad to have finished it, and then total devastation! I have since then scoured for hours looking for a solution, downloading all kinds of garbage on my computer to recover this file out of sheer desperation. I don't know what I would have done without your simple help. I am doing the happy dance and so grateful to you! OH my goodness, you are my savior today! THANK YOU ever so much!!!!!!!!!!
