Comment:

My acer extensa 5420 has a built in webcam and mic. The utility that comes with it allows you to view video and take snap shots but it doesnt allow you to record video or audio.

Someone suggested windows movie maker but i cant find any "record" button.

Any advice on a standalone light weight possibly free application that will let me record audio video via the built in webcam and mic?

Thanks in advance!

I have version 5.1 and I see 'Capture Video' under the 'File' in the toolbar. When you proceed through that selection there is a 'Start Capture' button.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. Movie Maker Version 6 is installed. Capture Video does not exist under the File menu. See the screenshots in these links.

I just read that Movie Maker 6 "no longer supports importing video from an analog video source such as a VCR or from a webcam." - wikipedia

So back to my original question..:)

My logitech cam had a nice little app that let me record videos. Does a standalone application exist that will let me do this with my cam or any kind of webcam? TIA

I finally found some info at another forum. A clumsy app named LiveCam.exe exists in the windows folder on the Acer Extensa 5420. I have to create a file name and give it a MB limit. Then i have to go in and choose to enable the mic and the camera then i have to select audio capture then start the video capture to get both audio and video to record.

Super clumsy.. When i search thru download.com i cant find anything that does what i want and doesnt have a horrible review. I will udpate this if i ever find a better solution.

You could get the free Camstreams.com encoder and use that offline with the archiving function switched on...
