The option to "Save Image As" with some pictures on certain websites is disabled. A message box may pop up saying that the image is protected by copyright law or something to that effect. Is there anyway of "protecting" pictures that I may want to post on the internet from being saved and possibly edited by someone else?

If an image can be seen on a webpage then it can be copied or saved. Simple as that.

A watermark is a better solution but still can be edited out.

Hope this lends some understanding.

To expand on what Bryco stated, there is absolutely no way to protect any photos being posted online - assuming the user has the ability to see the photo at all.

A JavaScript hack to disable right-click is just that - a hack. Any user can simply disable JavaScript to overcome that "feature". Also, any photo that a user is viewing on their screen has already been downloaded to their PC. It is conveniently sitting in their browser cache just waiting for anyone to find it if they so choose.

When searching for album art for my MP3 collection I have even come across sites that overlay a transparent gif over the actual image, so whne doign a "save as" all I get is a blank image. Ratehr than taking the time to search my browser cache I would simply take a screenshot of my desktop and then crop it.

A watermark is really the only "protection". You can't prevent someone from copying your photos, but you can prevent them from passing it off as their own. But, also as Bryco, stated a watermark can be "edited" out. For it to be effective it should not be just around the edges where a user could simply crop it out. It should also not be so thin that it could be easily photoshopped out. There is a fine line when creating an effective watermark that does not significantly take away from the purpose of the image.
