When I bought a new computer, I saved my video files onto VCD/DVD. When I loaded them into the new computer, many appeared as DAT files, and will not open with Realplayer, WMP or DivX player.
Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

Sure - - those are 'meant' to be played as discs, and are likely 'standalone player' compatible - but VideoLan Player should work
Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real.

If you copy the .dat files to your hard drive, you can change the file extension to .mpg (or .mpeg). The .dat files on a VCD are just MPEG-1 encoded files, with a different extension.
To play the .dat files from the VCD (without copying to HD), right click a .dat file and chose Open With (or Open, then Select program from a list). Navigate to WMP. Believe me, WMP will play them.
