In Photoshop CS, I used to be able to select one part of an image (say a car bonnet) and if I missed a small portion of the bonnet, I could select the area and color it in, without any color differences (darkening). I somehow lost the ability to do this, and now when I do the same thing, it darkens over the two areas.

I use Elements, not familiar with CS, but all selection tools have several modes. Add to selection, subtract, etc. What mode are you using? What selection tool?
