I have read your question several times but apparently do not know what you are wanting to know.
If I use Windows Explorer I can view the contents of a folder containing images. I can change the order in which they appear in that folder by clicking on the column label to include "Date picture taken".
When I upload my images from my camera I batch rename all files to include some information about the photo event and they are ordered by when I took them so #001 was the first image taken and #099 the last if I took 99 pictures.
If I open that folder in any image editing application they appear in the same order.
I am not so sure of what you are desiring.
Irfanview provide the batch rename utility and the program is free.
If the above does not help then please explain what you are wanting to do and where you are wanting to do it. eg. to prnt them in order or display them in order or ...?

Yes SKEETS, you can use Picasa 2.0 ....free from google. That will let you keep the photos in date orders.
It is also a great editing tool, I use it quite a bit with my photography. Some HELP in posting on Cnet plus free progs and instructions Glad to Help!
