If you have an avi file & want to convert to vob. Use nero vision express. You might need the dvd plugin.
It will take a couple of hours, but with your ram, I'd expect 4.
Winavi is quicker.

cnf,

creating a dvd data file, doesn't mean it will play on a domestic dvd player, although it will play on a pc.

Or, have I misunderstood.

If you don't want to go bald, do the following:

1. Open control panel
2. "Add and remove software"
3. Remove Nero
4. Go to Nero.com and download all their clean tools
5. Execute all the clean tools from #4
6. Buy some other video capture software.

Nero is crap.
Good luck.
