I had to start another thread for this very frustrating topic!
I bought Nero 6 Ultra Edition today. My goal is to transfer my video files from my Sony digital camcorder to the computer & burn them on DVD's.
So I install the software. Looking in the manual it says to go to the "Photo & Video" category. I do that. Then it says click on the "Make Your Own Video-DVD" option, however, THERE IS NO "MAKE YOUR OWN VIDEO-DVD" option.
WHAT'S GOING ON?????
What they have is:
Make Video CD
Make Super Video CD
Convert DVD-Video movies to Nero Digital
Make miniDVD (the manual says this is for cd only???)
and then there's a few more options that aren't even close to what i want to do.

can anyone tell me which one I need to select to make a DVD?
any clue as to why i don't have the "Make your Own DVD-Video" button?

Oy Vay!!!!!

Hi Julie! Does your copy of Nero offer, under Nero Digital, Nero Vision Express (not just Nero Express)? This is the part you need to capture footage from your camcorder and edit and burn it to DVD. If not, email me (click on my name).

2 Reasons thta I can think of...

You have have smartstart set for CD. At the top right of nero smartstart you will see a DVD/CD switch. This option allows you to block out dvd options if you are working with cd's, and visa versa, Slide the switch to DVD and you will see the dvd options.

Nero will also automaticaly omit all dvd options if it does not see a dvd burner. check your burner drivers and nero drive check for problems

blackbill --

i think you're right about me not having a DVD burner. i should've paid attention the first time you suggested it in the first thread before i went out & bought Nero 6 Ultra for $99!!!! : )

it finally dawned on me last night.
i looked at my computer papers & saw I have a "32x/10x/40x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive" and it hit me that it only probably burns CD's.

so now what do I do... go buy a new computer??? WHAT'S A GIRL TO DO???

is there such a thing as a DVD burner that i could just plug into my computer??? please say yes. and please tell me it's cheap.. LOL!!!

OOPS!!!

Yes, you can get an external USB dvd burner (make sure you have a USB2 port on your computer though) I believe a dvd burner will work on a usb1 or 1.1 but it is slllooooow. You can get a usb external for about $100 - $150 give or take a few bucks

You did not mention the computer you have so I can't say this positively, but installing an internal dvd burner is not that hard. You should consider this before a usb drive. Internals are cheaper and they run faster.

i have a Gateway 300X, INtel Pentium 4 1.8 GHZ Processor & Motherboad, 256 MB of RAm, 60GB 7m Ultra Ata Hard Drive.

does that tell you enough info to let me know if installing an internal dvd burner would work? i'm not a computer whiz, so all this is over my head.

Is there any way to determine if I have a USB2 port? All I know is I have two spots to plug in at the front of my computer (there might be some more in the back?) i have my Mouse plugged in one and the other I plug in my digital camera and I plug in my digital camcorder with the USB cable to transfer stuff. so i assume it's a USB port (i told you i wasnt'a computer whiz! : ), i just dont know if it's 1 or 2???

thanks for your help!

Yes, your system will support an internal...

Pop the lid off take the old drive out and slide the new one into the drive bay... it will plug in the exact same way that you old one did.

You may have to set the master/slave switch, but your install directions will talk about this.

As far as usb2 is concerned... you can download a program called SANDRA and it will take a look at your machine and tell you more than you will ever want to know about it. You can find it here:

that computer does support USB2. As blackbill suggested you will get better performance with an internal drive and for less money (starting around $60). However, installing a new component for the first time can be a daunting task - but one which is rewarding in the end. Learning about computer hardware seems difficult, but the basics don't take a lot to learn.

If you can, find someone that can help you out or ask here and we can help you along the way or point you to a tutorial. (By the way you should be able to add an internal DVD drive without removing your existing drive - if I'm looking at the right picture you have an empty bay for another drive on your computer betweent he combo drive and the floppy drive)

However, if you really don't want to try, then an external drive (for more money) would be the way to go.

thanks for all the help! i called my sister-in-law, who is a computer whiz, and she was in the process of ordering a DVD burner herself. she ordered a NEC ND-3540a (thoughts anyone?) and as soon as she gets it installed, makes a dvd and gives me the thumbs up i'm going to get one too. of course, i will have her walk me through the installation or drive my computer up to her house to do it! ; )
once i get that installed i'm sure you guys will be hearing from me again when i start trying to burn my DVD videos!!! : )
thanks!
julie

Go to the Nero site. I think they have an update that installs Nero Vision Express on Nero ultra 6. I doubt if you need a new drive.
