Hey .

I have a JVC GR - D370EK and i used to be able to upload my footage from it using the Firewire cable then one day it stopped working so i got a new one under the warranty , then that one worked for around aweek then it to wouldn't recognise anything being plugged in , then a friend asked my to upload footage using his Camera with a firewire so i done it , then went to upload the second tape and it stopped working. i think its something to do with my firewire port surging the camcorder ?

well anyway my camera is now out of warranty and it has a S-video port and the back of my pc has one with a yellow hole like a RCA one , and i tried to plug the camera into the s-video one because i bought just a s-video to s-video , but when i plug it in nothing happens the svideo still works as it works when i plug it into my television . im wondering if anyone can help me or have any other methods of getting my footage to the pc ?

Thanks for your time

Cammie

The yellow one is usually COMPOSITE

If it is on the graphics card - OUTPUT

If it is on a TV card - INPUT

"then one day it stopped working so i got a new one under the warranty"

Are you saying that you got a new firewire cable, firewire card, or camera?

Are we talking about on-board firewire, or a PCI firewire card?

Rather than finding a work-around, you should fix the actual problem. To help you with this, we need the above information.

If it's on-board, I'd try an add-on PCI card (cheap as chips). It sounds like faulty firewire ports to me.

I'm looking at the words, "for a while" in that sentence. Does the Hi-8 still work in the firewire, or is it also not working?

"i tried the new camera in my friends firewire port on his pc , when i got my new cable , i tried the new cable & the old one and nothing .... ?"

That would seem to suggest that the problem is with either the cables or camera. If the Hi-8 camera still works with your on-board firewire, I think it's safe to assume your ports are alright. Again, it comes back to either the cable or camera. All I can suggest, at this time, is that you try another cable. You just might have been unlucky enough to get two bad cables in a row. Try a cable from a different supplier.

I have a JVC GR-D290AA, and I am still using the same firewire cable that I've used since day one. However, firewire (and to a lesser extent, USB) cables seem to be prone to failure. This seems to be one area where you shouldn't look for bargain prices.

The s-video on your graphics card is usual an output socket. Although, the ATI "All-In-Wonder" card has both inputs and outputs. You'll have to consult your graphics card documentation.

Were you using the same firewire cable with both the JVC and the Sony? If so, it could still be the cable that's at fault.

Does the camera show up in Device Manager, when it's connected (via firewire)? It should be under "Imaging Devices". Does your firewire controller show in Device Manager (under "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers")?

Just a thought ... What capture software are you using? Have you tried other capture software? It's a longshot (especially as you also tried on your friends machine), but the software may have lost its ability to see the firewire.

A possible work-around ... Do you still have the ability to upload stills via USB? I have found that (although, it isn't supposed to work this way) Windows Movie Maker can capture video from my JVC via USB. You could give that a try.

Sorry, I don't use instant messengers. Just never got into "chatting".

If you've got a TV capture card, you should be able to use that. You may have to set it up through your TV, though.
