Am I able to burn my mp3 files on to a dvd instead of cd and if so how many songs can I put on the dvd and would the quailty be similar to cd quality

It's all just ones and zeros regardless of the media. How many will fit on 4.7GB depends on the individual MP3 file sizes.

If you are merely writing the files as data, there is no difference. But, an mp3 music CD is in a specific format that can be played in regular CD players that support it.
There is no such type of mp3 DVDs that I am aware of that will allow you to play the music in a DVD player.

NERO gives options, MP3 and WMA DVD, but if you burn in the above formats, only a limited range of Standalone Players support either of these formats.
If you burn as DATA DVD then they will be read only by a PC/Laptop DVD Drive.
