I recently purchased an AverMedia AVerTV Go 007 FM Plus TV tuner card for my Dell Dimension 2300. After installing, I have had problems saving in MPEG-II format. After dealing with their tech support, they came to the conclusion that my Intel 82845G Extreme Graphics Controller would not support MPEG-II encoding since the "the onboard Intel graphics adapter isn't a full fledged VGA card that supports DirectX 9.0. The one you have onboard is actually a DirectX 8.1 compliant adapter hardware-wise."

Anybody seen this problem? Any workarounds or suggestions? If a new graphics card is required, any suggestions for this Dell Dim. 2300 that are reasonably priced?

Hauppauge, has own mpeg2 encoder/decoder built in, no need to rely on video card drivers.

What oil_tan says!

You bought a tv tuner card with SOFTWARE COMPRESSION. In other words, it does not have its own processor. Instead it relies on software and the use of your computer cpu to do the processing of the captured data. Unless you have a very fast computer, you will not be able to get very good quality mpeg2.

Hauppage is HARDWARE COMPRESSION. It does all of its own processing with a dedicated processor... almost no power draw from your computer.

PowerVCR is an excellent recording program. It has many options of format and quality. Personnaly I use MPEG1 because I never was able to figure out how to edit Mpeg2 without running into the problem of video and audio getting out of sync.
