It seems every time I burn a good mpeg file to a DVD movie the sound get thrown off by a second or so. I'm using Nero, should I try another program?

I used to have that problem a lot. Then I started using Winavi to convert, and Nero Express to do the burning. Things seem to come out in sync much better now.
I wonder what'll happen if I do this ?

Nero is not good for any kind of video editing/burning. I had problems with it, and many others have also. There are many free utilities out there that are excellent. Here is an excellent site: http://forum.videohelp.com/
On the Left column are many suggestions for video utilities, scan them for a good burner.

I suggest u using xilisoft mpeg to dvd converter(http://www.xilisoft.com/mpeg-to-dvd-converter.html) .although V2.0 is not very good, the upgraded V3.0 recently is worth u having a try.
