I was wondering if there was a free or even a one-time-use converter for these files. I have searched and tried several converters, but the trials only let me convert a portion of the file. All of the ones I've seen have been around $30 for a full version. My sister took a very short movie on her digital camera of my 1-year-old daughter just starting to walk. Her Daddy is in Iraq and I sent it to him, but he can't view .mov files on the computers available to him. He can view .wmv files because he sent me some. I just can't justify spending $30 on a program I will only use one time and then never again. Thank you in advance.

If he downloads the 'free' Quicktime player, he can play MOV files.

Sorry, I do not check for private messages

Ham, he said he can only use PC's available to him, so d/ling quicktime would not be the answer I don't think.

Windows Movie Maker will do it for you. Drag and drop your avi into the timeline, then click on finish movie and send in an e-mail. It will automatically convert the avi to a wmv file. I just tried it. Let me know, ok?

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I tried to drag and drop it and it wouldn't take it. I tried to import it and it said it wasn't a supported file type. I was really hoping there was something in Windows that I hadn't found that would do it, too. You are right about him not being able to download and install anything on the computers they let him use. He asked the computer support people on the base and they won't install it for him. If it would help you try things, I would be happy to send you the file. It's 2.5mb. Thank you again.

I can convert the file for you no sweat. Or you could post it on a site, as is, like www.youtube.com for him to view from any computer, anywhere, anytime...

Probably the best solution in this particular case.

Quicktime Pro, or Canopus ProCorder is what I'd use to convert, FYI.
