Is there a software that I can use to directly transfer minidv to vcd without consuming up to 12gb of disk space?

I don't know why you'd want to convert to VCD, which uses MPEG1. What you want to use is MPEG4, which will give you much higher quality and retain a small file size. (or MPEG2 if you plan to burn a DVD of the video) There are many software products for converting video, but I think you'd be better off getting a device that will do the conversion for you.
