Hi I have a couple of films- avi format and bought an S video cable that does show my desktop and stuff, but as soon as I try to play the avi file on the laptop, the screen on the tv is boxed out purple and no sound or picure. Any thoughts on how to sort?

Model of Laptop? "No Sound" S-video doesn't carry sound, only video. You'd need a cable like this:

1-3.5 mm Plug to 2-RCA Plugs

There's your sound. As for the picture, are you cloning your TV with your laptop? Is so, make your TV the primary and extend your TV to your laptop. You may have a "Swap Display" button depending on your video card. Or, disable your laptop video and make the TV the primary and only video displaying.
