Hi everyone,

Doing a little research for a friend of mine. She has a Dell Laptop and I burned a DVD video for her using Verbatim DVD-R media. I can play the DVD on my computer which was burned using Nero 6 and the file structure on the disc looks fine (windows media player recognizes it right away). However, when she puts the DVD into her laptop, it spins and spins like it won't recognize the disc.

I had her run the Nero info tool to see what types of media it supported and it recognized DVD-r media. The model of her drive is HL-DT-ST-CDRW/DVD GCC4244.

I'm wondering if this is more of a drive issue or is it a media issue? Someone suggested that it could be the brand of media, if that may be the case is there any particular brand I should go towards? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Paul

It could be the media, but finding the right media for finicky drives can be a hit and miss endeavor. Try doing some googling concerning that drive/laptop and media compatibility.

Other possible issues is that the drive may be going bad. Can that drive read other DVD media? Pressed and/or burned?

Also, what format is the video? perhaps her computer lacks the proper software or codecs to play it.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the response. The drive can read pressed DVD media, she had never attempted burned (as far as DVD's go). I also had her install the k-lite codec pack thinking it could have been a codec issue, but that did not help.

I'll do some googling and see what I can find out regarding the media.

The codec issue was a longshot. The fact that the disc just spins and spins would seem more like a hardware compatability issue to me.

At the very least she should be able to view the contents of the disk through explorer if it is not a hardware/compatibility issue. Try this. insert the disk while holding the shift button. This will disable the autoplay feature for the drive - you will probably want to hold it for 10-20 seconds to ensure the autoplay does not start. Then see if you can view the contents of the disc through explorer. if so, then I think you can rule out a hardware/compatibility issue and start looking at software issues.
