everytime i try to burn a dvd my computer keeps locking up. i've never had any problems in the past (using nero) until about 2 weeks ago. now everything i do to a video file causes my computer to lock up somewhere along the process. i have tried re-encoding, chopping, editing and everything but it locks up doing that to. i use these programs: Nero 7, Windvd creator, Adusoft dvd, DVDflick, Virtdub, Winavi converter. Whatever i use to try to make a video file work it always locks up. I have installed/uninstalled and tweaked god knows how many codecs. At the moment i have Ace mega codecs installed which is what i used to have and had no problems. This problem seems to have just come out of the blue without me installing any other software. I am starting to think it may actually be my dvd rewriter although its only 1 1/2 years old. Failing that i think a re-install of XP is on its way if its a corrupt file or corrupt codec issue. Anyone have any suggestions? Appreciate any help. Many thanks.
Just been thinking, I CAN burn DATA only files through Nero so it cant be my dvd rewriter. It's only video that I have the problems with. If thats any help. Thanks.
Have you tried updating your video drivers? Don't use video drivers from Microsoft (sometimes installed via Automatic Updates). Try doing a rollback on the video drivers. If that doesn't help, go to the card manufacturers website and download the latest drivers. You could also try (using System Restore)restoring to a point more than 2 weeks ago (before the problem began). Backup any recently added or changed files before you restore.

Im not sure but I think theres a way to turn off video preview while burning, try so if you have video preview on. I guess it could be several things, try reinstalling the burn program (after a while my Nero all of a sudden stopped opening Nero Vision and I had to reinstall) or it could be video drivers, try a couple things out and see if it helps, if not come back.

thanks for the help guys. I posted another comment later but I think it was deleted. nevermind. I re-installed XP. Re-installed Nero and kept everything to a minimum but it was still freezing. I have tried everything. Virtualdub, Windvd creator, DVDflick, Win-avi, Nero, and other dvd programs as well as fiddled with codecs until my fingers hurt. The movies I am having problems with show as fine in Gspot. My memory is tested fine. System is tested fine. I don't know. It's not my burner because I can burn data and music no problems at all. Its only DVD that I have the problem with. either making dvd or converting/compressing it. We'll see how it goes. Many thanks anyway.

I have twiddled with codecs until my fingers hurt. win-avi, virtualdub, dvdflick and other programs lock up too. g spot says the movies are fine and they PLAY fine. i just cant convert them to dvd or recode them or re-compress them or anything. I can make a data or music cd/dvd without problems. and i use Philips cd/dvd's. I dont know. We'll see what happens anyway. will keep trying. many thanks.
