My digital camera (Nikon S52) on the default setting takes JPG pictures that are about 1.8 MB in size. After I perform the most minor edit in MS Paint, and save it again in JPG format, I noticed that the size is immediately reduced to around 1.3 MB. What is MS Paint doing?

It's 'probably' saving at a reduced quality.

In my opinion, MS Paint is a pretty sorry editor. Check the following site for some free photo editors that might be better.

Photoshop is probably the most popular, but it is expensive. Personally I use an old Paint Shop Pro.
