My sony handycam is older and uses the 8mm tapes not the high 8mm ones just 8mm. I have a VCR/DVD recorder on my TV and can hook the sony up and put the footage on DVD that way. What I want to know is it then possible for me to put that DVD in the computer so I can e-mail the footage?

I want to make small clips of my son in his football game to send to family and right now a new digital camcorder is not an option so trying to work with what I have old as it is. Mary

It can be done, but video files take a humongous amount of file space. You would probably have to convert it to one of the formats that the cell phones use. The wideo would be very small and the quality would be not very good.
Actually I don't think it's very practical. Much better to put them on a CD or DVD and use snail mail.

Well I tried it to see what would happen and it's a vob file on the DVD. I pasted it to the desktop and re-named it mpeg so now I have an mpeg video clip on the desktop. I realzie that is big for e-mailing but at least I figured out I could do that. Mary

I use 'Total Video Converter' and sometimes 'AVS' converter. TVC can convert almost anything to anything else and I've had very good luck with it. It costs about $40 US.

But you could try some Google searching. You might get lucky and find something free that will do do the conversion that you want.

Very good Mary! VOB (MPEG2) files are pretty high quality.

I am quite proud of myself for coming up with that. You can re-name it AVI or what ever. It's a short clip and is 64.1 mb. I also found out if I put it in windows movie maker and select e-mail it saves as mpeg but the file is only 9.63 mb and the quality was the same. Granted it's not as good as having a digital video camera but it will work for what I want to do which is just e-mail short clips of my son in a football game. I will send the file using rapidshare. Does anyone know the company for those converter boxes for the computer to do this? I thought I had looked at a popular one a few years ago but can't remember the company, maybe pinacle or something. I know there are probably a few and I want to see what looks good. Mary

What kind of converter box do you mean, Mary? What do you want to convert, and to what?

(edit)
It finally dawned on me Mary, that what you probably want is a TV capture box or card, so you can feed the video from your camera to your PC.

There are some examples here:

Dazzle is what I was thinking of and that's pinacle same type of thing I guess. Would the quality be better with this and is it easy to use? Mary
