Icons in computer Disappear

When I disconnect my camera from the USB port using the Safely Remove hardware Icon the icon disappears,also icons for devices with removable storage in my computer except the CD Rom.What is causing the problem? I have an oregon scientific camera and it works fine.I restored the icons with system restore. Any help will be appreciated James

I have always just disconnected the USB from my cameras, I never fooled with the safely remove hardware icon. If I'm not mistaken there was another critical update for the safe hardware remover.
