I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and I'm pretty much sick of it. I feel like 80% of the video files I try to import into it are not supported and I can only export to very few different formats correctly. I just spent the last hour converting videos into formats that premiere would accept and then editing my movie only to have premiere have an error when trying to export it to any format. Can anyone recommend a better video editing program with a wider range of supported formats that actually works and is easy to use?

I've used PP, Avid Liquid, FCP and a few others.... what I have really grown attached to though is Sony Vegas Pro8. A really great program and I find that (once you get used to the interface) operates MUCH faster than PP. It supports just about all formats, including avchd, outputs dvd as well as blu ray, works with multiple monitors (I have it spread out on 4 monitors). It will also run scripts so you can automate some of that more tedious editing stuff that you're always doing, and you can open multiple instances of the program also so you can render one project and start on another at the same time

You can get it cheaper at B&H Photo (something like $150) but it is a somewhat more limited version.

There is also a consumer verion of Sony Vegas (called Sony Vegas Platinum) but I find it a bit to limiting.

If you don't need all the bells and whistles in the transitions, I use Showbiz, works great! I also have Pinnacle Studio, but when I start getting errors I use Showbiz

I was reading this review and thinking of going for Pinnacle because it seems like the easiest to use. I just want to make sure it won't have the same problems premiere has.http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2332211,00.asp

I have Pinnacle Studio, it is real finnicky and doesn't work right half the time. Also the Tech support is real flakey on it.
If you buy Pinnacle make sure your PC has the right vid card and meets all the specs or you may be buying lots of extras just to get it to work properly.
From the specs you said, 2ghz processor is quite minimal for Pinnacle.
Also you may have to buy all the extra transitions....

Pinnacle Studio is a good program in theory but it often falls apart in practice. The interface is pretty easy to use but there are quite a few bugs. You CAN work around them though if you know what to look for.

I don't know if you do any work with DD5.1 sound but you should be aware that although studio can OUTPUT AC3 (5.1 sound), it can not import AC3 files with out downmixing to stereo.

Personally, I have it (version 11) but no longer use it.

I would strongly recommend/suggest corel video studio x2 professional version after reading and understanding your problems. It is a very stable program, which means that it doesn't hang up as frequently as others do and also has a very good rendering engine so you would not have any problem while exporting your video to any of the many available formats. And
as far as import is concerned it accepts most formats .3gp.avi.mov and many more other frequently used formats.
