Hi,
I am just wondering is there any freeware
software to capture all or part of a DVD
while playing it in my laptop and save it
into a file, preferably in .wmv format? I
will appreciate your help very much.

AutoGK will convert VOB files on a DVD to AVI files, which can be played on WM Player. As long as it's not copy protected of course.

Thanks for the help. One question before I
download autoGK. Does it convert an entire vob file on the DVD disc into one .AVI file? Can I play the DVD and start and stop ripping at certain times to copy selected part of the DVD? that is my main goal here as I have six hour long DVDs with huge vob files, and I just need to save (and possibly make VCD) only small segments of the DVD. Thanks in advance

Vob files can not be HUGE... There is a maximum size of (if I remember correctly) about 1gig.

AVI files are not the type of file you want to use if you are limited on space. An average avi is at least 3 times the size of a vob

Better to work with mpg files... and it just so happens that a vob is nothing more than an mpeg2 file. Copy the vobs to disk and change the extention from vob to mpg. you will then have sections of movie in terms of an mpeg format. Most any video editor will handle mpg.

Yes. I will take hours to do each VOB and the AVI file will be about twice the size of the VOB.

"Can I play the DVD and start and stop ripping at certain times to copy selected part of the DVD?"

No

You will have to convert the complete VOB file and then use a video editor to cut out the parts of the AVI that are unwanted.
