Check out the FUJI s9000 before you settle on the nikon.
Just bought it... It's not a true slr but it's 9megapixel, and the lens is not interchangable but they seem to have struck a really perfect balance between a wide angle and a telephoto lens. It has a 10.7 zoom and just enough wide angle to do the job without coming accross as "wide".
It has the ability to use two different types of memory cards, shoots video (with sound). will give you a choice of picture formats (including RAW for those really important shots), Overlay shooting, black and white shooting, chroma shooting... the list goes on. The best thing about it is that it can be used as a compltely automatic point-and-shoot, or you can go completely manual for full control.
It's just a downright exellent camera... and the price won't kill you either.
