Hi, I am trying to transfer a mini DV video tape that is taken from a HDV (hi def) video camera to a DVD. With my standard (non HDV) camera I used to simply connect it to my PC via firewire (IEE 1394)cable and captureto my PC with Ulead, WinDVD or Roxio software then burn the footage to a DVD. But my PC won't recognise this new HDV camcorder. Am i doing something wrong? Or do I need soecial software a special cable?

The limited factor is your camera. I found this out the hard way when I recently volunteered to do a similar project for church.

You said your camera is not HDV and that your MiniDV is HDV. I was told trying to do this is like trying to play a DVD in your car's CD player. To the naked eye, the MiniDV cassette looks the same but the HDV encoding is different than standard def -- and not backward compatible.

You'll need to get access to an HDV camera and know that you will lose the HD resolution when moving to DVD.

I got in a time pinch and handed my project off (a few HDVs) to a Photo Archival Company. The made DVDs from our HDV tapes for about $15 per tape. I found them at http://thephotoarchivalco.com through google. DVDs turned out just fine. This company will dump the HDV to various formats on hard drive if you want to do editing. I didn't go for that, I just had the whole HDV moved to DVD as is.

Thanks Nick... but what I was saying is that my new camcorder is a HDV. For some strange reason my PC will not recognise it. My PC recognises my non HDV camcorder.

Your title say "HDMI transfer...."

Are you using the fire wire connect or the HDMI connect?

HDV cams can transfer your high definition footage as normal DV (and will be seen as a normal DV cam) or they can transfer as HD. Make sure your cam is set for HDV transfer.... otherwise it will not be recognized as a HDV cam. Your manual will tell you how to switch back and forth.

Thanks Blackbill it worked!. Thanks for your suggestion :)

My PC recognises the cam when it is set to standard res say 4:3 or 16:9, but not as a HDV.

Set your cam for HDV and check your device manager and see if the cam shows up there. It should show up somewhere in there as AVC DEVICE (or something to that nature anyway) If it's there then the problem is with the capture software that you are using. If not there then there is a problem with the cam or XP. Make sure your software is capable of HDV capture. I know that the earlier versions of ulead were not.

You can also download a free HDV capture utility called HDVsplit (google for it). If the cam and XP are functioning properly then you WILL be able to capture with this program.
