Hi, I have a sony dsc w50 camera but have lost the manual. I downloaded the one from the sony site , but I think it is not as complete. Anyway, I have been searching round the internet for info on digital cameras and what formats they use. I have an ISP which phoning them cannot tell me the attachment limit. I believe that it might be 10 or 20 megs. He said something odd like the most he saw was 7 megs go through. He also told me to zip my jpegs and everyone knows that this is an already compressed format. 1. Is there cameras that use .png format (cause this is better than jpeg right?) 2.Can I make my camera just another format or would I/can use .raw or RAW picture format and change with third party software. And is RAW smaller not likely right probably the reason for jpeg and such right? 3. What can I do to make like 12 pics go through as an attachment? Set the resolution lower the only option? (they are like 40 MB) 4.What other formats are there? GIFF? and what is TIFF and does anyone use it? You know what sucks. Is when people answer posts with assumptions.

XP has a built-in solution to resize photos for email - - unfortunately your specs state: OS: whatever (don't want to make any 'assumptions', as that would suck) Resizing down or lossy jpg compression is about all there is, unless you wish to send them piecemeal - about the only uncompressed file format would be BitMaps (which are huge) - there is no 'magic' format. JPG can be highly compressed (about 20 to 1 iirc) - while detail may be lost, it may or may not be noticeable, depending on the image I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.

OK you lost me sort of on the compressing jpegs part can I compress these jpegs farther or are you just talking about the setting in my camera? Thanks you for note just putting xp has a resize thing. That was very cool. I am using linux for dummies btw aka ubuntu. I just have never used email more than 100 times in 8 years so I know little about what is required. You know what sucks. The limit could be around 10 - 16 mb. you could always send your photos in several emails if you are not certain how to resize them??

Irfanview is very good software for resizing/cropping etcetc: http://www.irfanview.net/index.htm

Under Ubuntu, you could use F-Spot to resize jpeg's. Or you can install the Gimp, and use that. Personally, I get annoyed when people send me photos that are too big to view on my monitor without scrolling. Your recipients would also probably appreciate manageable-sized photos. Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.
