Edit picture on Desktop

When I put a picture on my desktop, it's either to large to see the whole picture or the picture looks disorted. Can someone tell me how to make the picture look normal.

Change the picture resolution downward in order to enjoy the whole picture on the desktop.

Try a resolution of 1024x768 and a DPI of 72.
