dvi monitor not working

February 2, 2012 at 08:14:50
Specs: Windows 7, i3
My new 14" notebook PC has a HDMI and a VGA port, I wanted to make use of the older 19" LCD monitor which has VGA & DVI ports, so I bought a cable with one end HDMI and DVI on the other. Both monitors will show when I connect both VGA-VGA cable and HDMI-DVI cable in same time. But if I disconnet the VGA-VGA cable leaving only HDMI-DVI connected, the 19" LCD monitor does not show. Why?

Check the settings on the monitor and make sure it's either set to auto detect or set to the DVI input.

Thank you.
The monitor has no hardware setting for this purpose. When VGA is connected, it allows Analog setting. However, today I realized the reason could be related to Windows 7. It happened that with DVI connected alone, at the beginnng when i turned on the PC, it showed "digital" and also the Windows 7 welcome screen "Windows is starting" some sort like that. After a while, however, when the PC actually booted into desktop, the DVI monitor was not active anymore and became blank. In the Windows Control Panel, the displays settings page also could not detect the DVI monitor. So now I believe the problem is not from hardware but Windows 7 related. Appreciate if someone could give me some suggestions. Thanks.
