I recently purchased a computer from a guy in my office. It had a few divx movies already on it. It has a dvd burner and also roxio media program, and a nero program. Since i don't watch movies at my desk much i wanted to burn them to dvd. I can't seem to get either program to see the movies in the folder. Is there something that i'm doing wrong or am i not using the right programs? If someone could shed some light on the subject for me it would be greatly appriciated.

To start with I'll mention that some of the new DVD players will play DIVX/XVID movies. That's kinda nice because you can pack a bunch of DIVX movies on a DVD disc.

My Nero (version 7) will create DVDs from DIVX AVI files. If yours doesn't, you might need a newer version of Nero or a DIVX codec installed.

Does Windows Media Player play the DIVX files?

Nero vision express does the job. Nero needs the dvd plug in.

Winavi is quicker.

But as aegis says, if the avi/divx file doesn't play, or you can't hear it. You need codecs.

Yes they play fine on windows media player. I have nero 8 and I couldn't get it to work. I also downloaded the trial version of winavi video converter and had no luck with that either. The movies are in a folder named divx movies, and none of the programs see anything in the folder. It just shows as a empty folder.

Are the files in the folder avi, or another type of file?

If they have a .divx extension, try changing them to .avi

If you don't see any extensions, open My Computer > Tools > Folder options > View tab and deselect 'Hide extensions for know file types'.

Just rename them in My Computer. For example:

movie01.divx
change to
movie01.avi

I figured out how to burn them, but there is hardly any sound. They play fine on media player. So as you guys said I probably need codecs. There is already a divx codec installed in my programs. What codec do I need, and were do I get it?

I was pretty much lost on gspot, but I did see something about audio codecs on there, so I went to the 2nd link to look for audio codecs. I noticed that I have one of the codecs on my desktop; ac3 1 46. I clicked on it and it installed, and got to the screen that said done and it stayed there until I closed it. I clicked on it again and it did the same thing. Is it installed, or do I have to do something else with it? Also upon further review the DVD I burned that I thought worked except for the sound only plays for a few seconds and then freezes. Will a codec fix all of this?

You could install the complete codec pack.

If, the dvd plays with sound, then you have the codec.

It might be a corrupted file.

If you really want to get these to play.

Try a repair, http://divxrepair.sourceforge.net/

Ok, using winavi.

Click on the dvd icon at the bottom right.

Browse to one of the files you have changed to avi.

Select somewhere to save it (output directory)
At the bottom should be output format = DVD

Convert, after 45mins or so, go to the output folder, you should have some vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder

Open the VIDEO_TS.IFO, see if that plays ok.

If it doesn't, before converting, next to output, try changing some settings in advanced.
I don't know what you would need to change, it will be trial & error.

If you can play the Video ifo file on your pc. & you have burnt it correctly, ie as a video dvd.
To burn with winavi, on front page.
Menu, burn disk, add files, dvd movie, then select the files from the folder you have converted.

If you still have a problem, then I suspect your dvd player.

My friend can't play some of the dvd's I have burnt on her player, but they work on mine.
