You didn't mention the type of camera but most of now don't light up the "new hardware" icon. It will instead show up in MY COMPUTER when plugged in as 'mass storage device' or 'removable drive (f, or g or...)'

As with other plug and play devices, you can set it up so that the pictures are automatically openned for viewing or editing or what ever.

He did say what type of camera. He just did not say what model. If you read closely you can assume he has a Fuji FinePix.

The Fuji FinePix cameras I have seen do not support 'mass storage device'. You must either use the included software or use a seperate card reader.

Have you tried reinstalling the software or used a card reader.

Also, have you tried this:

1. Connect the digital camera to the PC. The "Viewer" window opens and the images are displayed as thumbnails.

2. Click "Select All" in the "Edit" menu.

3. All the images are selected (indicated by a pink frame). With the left-hand mouse button held down, move (drag) the images to the folder in which you want to save them and then release the button (drop).
