When using Cyberlink Power Director, Working with video files, when I go into the settings to change the audio encoding from PCM to Mpeg Layer 3, the program freezes for a second then performs an illegal operation....I've downloaded a few mpeg layer 3 codecs and does the same thing...Before I had to reformat and reinstall windows xp, I didn't have this problem...

Help....Thanks...

I gave up long ago on Cyberlink products. Every product of theirs that I've used had bugs. Which is probably why they give them away with CD/DVD burners.

You'd save yourself a lot of headaches if you use almost any other software for the task.

Power Director is rated the best out of all the editing programs when I did a search on google....I tried Sony Vegas, but it will not even open already compressed avi files.....

Then you did something wrong because both the consumer version and pro version of Vegas opens ANY avi. (I have the pro version but I started long ago with the cheaper version)

Power Directer is not very good. You would be better off with Ulead or Pinnacle Studio... or even Vegas.

Any problems you have with "already compressed avi files" are likely to be codec related. Avi is just a container vessel for what could be any one of a number of different codecs. Gspot is a free utility for determining which codecs are used in a file, and whether or not that codec is installed on your machine. This may lead to a solution to your problems with both Vegas and Power Director.

Well I found out what the problem was. It was the klcodec250 pack... I had to uninstall it and reinstall it without installing any of the audio portions....

I have Vegas 6 and 7....I'm able to import any video but for some reason and shows the file, but can't do anything with it. When I imported a uncompressed file (huge files) it was able to read the file and was able to play it. Also depending on what compression, (what codec used) I was able to get audio but no video...I never had any luck with Vegas. Maybe I'm doing something wrong..

I hardly ever get any errors with Power Director, it's very easy to understand. Every once and a while I will get an Illeagal Operation...

Roxio Easy media creator is a great program to create professional DVDs and the layout is easy to understand and all the features you can think of, but it's one of the most buggiest program. I've tried adobe Premire, and Nero Vision and a few others, either they don't have many features or they are very hard to understand. I couldn't even find out how to import the movie file in Adobe Premier....

I have all the codecs on my computer, Power Director Regconizes all the avi files that are compressed using different codecs. Sony Vegas doesn't...

The most Common codecs I use
